Session One: Where to Begin

The party is currently taking orders from Captain Rhogar, who officially unites them as an elite squad of the city guard's best hired forces. While doing so, a guard initiate comes in, letting Captain Rhogar (and the party) know there's been a break in at the Museum of Ioun, attached to the Temple of Ioun, which has been closed for several days. Captain Rhogar asks the party to take care of it and, if possible, capture them alive for interrogation.

The party arrives on the scene just as the bandits are exiting the museum. A few minutes later, they've knocked them all out and tied them all up. Searching them, they find a Vicious Executioner's Axe (Ahmiks, Minotaur Barbarbian takes it) and a spellbook with a powerful undeath spell of some sort in it owned by someone named "Lorendai". Latro (Tiefling Swordmage) takes the spellbook.

In true good-cop, bad-cop fashion, Ahmiks intimidates one of the orcs in the group of bandits, then Tier (Half-Elf Bard) is very diplomatic with him, getting him to eventually agree to tell the party what's going on. They learn that there's some sort of mafia in the city, but the orc won't say any more until he's safely escorted to another town of city.

The pair also convince the rest of the bandits that they killed the orc for not answering their questions, but due to circumstances and proximities, convinced their other allies (Latro, Vicky [Human Wizard] and Svetlana [Razorclaw Shifter Druid]) of this as well. Latro, Vicky & Svetlana (Group A) bring the group of bandits to the guard headquarters for incarceration and interrogation, while Tier, Ahmiks and the orc (Group B) stop at a bar to have a few drinks before returning to the guard headquarters.

Group A, after dropping off the bandits in the prisons, walk into Captain Rhogar's briefing room and find two eladrin there with the captain. Captain Rhogar tells the party that, as their best hired guards, they're going to start taking orders directly from Lirinthiell, the older of the two eladrin men in the room and adviser to King Arinthius. They also get a higher rank such that they can command a backup unit (if too few people show up to a session).

The party (accidentally) mentions the spellbook they found, and winds up giving it back to Lorendai, who explains that it has a powerful evil spell that he's seeking someone with a better mastery of the arcane to look into a possible anti-spell for this spell. One that would be as radiant as this one is dark. The Museum/Temple of Ioun was protecting it because Ioun hates the undead, and that's why the museum was closed for a few days. Lorendai hasn't been out of Lirinthiell's sight for his whole visit, and will be escorted to the next town south along the river. Lorendai gives the party the Mulvera Stone, a stone with the power to aid in ritual casting, as a thank you for helping keep his spellbook safe. Latro took it for some odd reason, despite being unable to cast rituals. Vicky volunteers the party to handle escorting Lorendai and his spellbook.

Then, Group B arrives, and Tier explains the situation with the orc who will give valuable information on the town's mafia, which was not even remotely known to exist before this point. They decide to send the orc with Lorendai in a separate wagon, then interrogate him at the next town. Until then, they can't have him stay with the bandits in the prison, and they can't have him out in the open, so they check the orc into The Fine Vine, an Eladrin run upscale inn/tavern establishment, and the party guards his room.

A group of armed people come in (Half-Elf (Actually a Changeling), Bladeling, Kobold, Genasi, Elf and Tiefling), claiming to be relieving the party of their guard-post. Seeing through their bluff, Tier goes along with it, claiming a different room to be the one they're guarding than the one they're actually guarding. The assassins, however, see through his bluff and draw their weapons. During that battle, each of the assassins that fell rose back up as a zombie. The party successfully protected the orc. The tiefling assasin had a Flaming Longsword which Latro took.

The next day, it's early and the party and wagons are ready for the trek southward.

Session Two: Road Trip

After a day's travel south on the path next to the river, the party reached the edge of a swamp and made camp for the night. They were ambushed during the night by a trio of Black Dragon Wyrmlings (dragon equivalent of 4-5 year olds) who, when captured, revealed that they were sent by their mother, Xeviria. Two of the three were freed in exchange for that information. (The third had died in battle.)

Continuing along, they came to an Abyssal Wellspring (a sort of evil scar in the ground) around which a small group of Bullywug's had set up. The paranoid creatures attacked and were wiped out by the party who also healed the scar from the land.

Further down the road, the party was stopped by a group of lizardmen who claimed to require a toll of one person from their group to use as a slave. After insulting one of the lizardmen, the party cleared the whole slave camp of lizardmen and freed their slaves. They also found a map.

Using the map, the party saw which direction was more dangerous and chose the safer route to Blackport. Once there, they let the slaves (who were originally from there) go find whoever they may still know there. Lorendai got himself a room at The Weary Traveler, planning to catch a ship in the morning to continue on route to meet up with his mentor, Sariel Liaris, to find an opposite spell to a very evil spell which he discovered. The party booked a few rooms at The Weary Traveler as well.

The orc that was escorted separately then approached the party and said:

"Since you have kept your part of the bargain, I will tell you all I know about the mafia in Nerusia, which is a considerable amount. I and the rest of the group you arrested at the museum were of the highest rank of any non-dragon in the mob. Higher than us were only Xeviria and her four children. Xeviria is a black dragon. We were Xeviria's personal elite group, chosen from the ranks of various arms of the mob. Each arm of the mob is almost like it's own smaller mafia. The leader of one of these arms takes orders directly from the core of the mob. No one else in an arm of the mob knows about the mob's existence. The core consists of Xeviria, her kids, her personal elite group, the leaders of the various arms and the Razorbeards. The Razorbeards are a family of Duergar who run Razorbeard's Tavern, hiding Xeviria and many secret meetings in it's secret lower chambers and providing the mob core with ale and alchemy.

As for how the mob conducts it's business... Almost every group in Nerusia, from Mage's Guilds to Pawn Shops, are blackmailed into paying tributes, which are collected by the various arms. When she has a real job that needs doing, like a theft, she has her personal elite group do it, sending out some groups from various mob arms first to keep the city guard sufficiently distracted and sufficiently far away for us to succeed with no problem. As a matter of fact, if the clergy of the Temple of Ioun hadn't set up their museum specifically as a labrynth with all sorts of traps for us to find our way through, we would have been out of there probably a half an hour earlier.

Xeviria's ultimate goal is no less than to rule the city herself. She has promised that those in the mob core who've fallen in pursuit of her goals will be raised as elite undead guards under the glory of Vecna, the god of evil and secrets. She has promised that her children will be the city's lords and the next in line for her throne when she eventually dies. You are the first outside the mob's core to hear any of this.

Honestly, even if she is telling the truth, I'd rather start a new life out here than wind up as some zombie or wight or something... I'm not really sure how that offer even helps her... But it's almost like the air around her is made of fear itself. When she asks something of someone, in person, one can't easily disobey. I'm sure you can understand why I wanted to be safely away from the city before telling you all of this.

Is there anything more you wish to know?"

Session 3: Pirates

The group awoke to the sound of loud drunks below. They looked to be sailors, but somebody in the group realized they're not just sailors, but pirates. One of the pirates tried to convince Latro to let him take a look at his sword, quite obviously wanting to steal it. Not one to be fooled, the players wound up fighting the group. Tier convinced the barkeep to join in as well.

Afterward, the party went to the pirate's ship to kill them all before they'd get the chance to pillage Blackport. On board, they found a group of malnourished slaves. The group wound up giving the ship to both groups of slaves (this one as well as the previous group they saved), with the expectation that they would receive a cut of their merchanteering profits once they've gotten themselves on their feet. The slaves have also told the party that they will spread the tale of how they were freed by the party.

On their way back to Nerusia from Blackport, the party takes the more dangerous route through the Black Swamp, and rids it of a few dangerous beasts.

Back in Nerusia, they learn that while they were gone, crime had decreased dramatically, and the guard's forces were seeing a large influx of people, including several groups of adventurers. Despite things looking up though, Lirinthiell wants the party to check out the lead they received from the orc just in case. The party has begun preparing to head to Razorbeard's Tavern.
