When are people available to play? My class schedule is Tu/Thu, 3:50-8:10. I have no car, so I need to arrange rides.

Where can we play?

Does anyone have minis? If not, we can figure something out.

If we have no minis and there was either a computer hooked up to a Television or one of those laptops where the screen can be flipped around to go flat, or some other sort of screen that everyone can see at the same time, I can make it work for the terrain and minis and stuff (there's an app online I can use called OpenRPG).

I will need a volunteer to handle initiative cards (index cards for initiative. With readying actions and stuff, cards are better.)

I'll also ask that someone volunteer to handle status effects. (I'll show you how in the app, if we can use an app, otherwise we'll have to figure out some physical way of handling this.)

Yes, for 4th edition minis are necessary.

Lastly, if there's a central computer that all of you can use somewhere, I can install the FULL version of the char builder on it, so you can continue to use it passed level 3.

Is anyone else ride-less? It's probably easiest for me to host the game at my place...

What do you all think of game pieces and blocks for minis? They usually fit within a 1" x 1" square. Not really sure what to use for marks though... If we had some sort of colored chips the game pieces could stand on, that would work best...

List of conditions (and the colors I'm used to for them):
Bloodied (red)
Unconscious (two reds)
Dead (Remove from grid)
Marked by <player> (Need to distinguish which player did the marking, applies only to defenders) (blue & light blue)
Marked by <enemy> (Need to distinguish which enemy did the marking) (dark blue)
Dazed (gold)
Prone (black)
Immobilized (light grey)
Stunned (grey)
Dominated (cream)
Petrified (dark grey)
Quarried/Cursed/Oathed by <player> (Need to distinguish which player did the effecting, applies only to strikers, enemy can have more than one) (purple, light purple, dark purple)
Taking ongoing damage (can have more than one) (green, light green, dark green)
Colors used if we ran out of colors for a category (brown, dark brown)

We would also occasionally borrow colors... Like, if a battle had 2 different enemies that can mark, but no stunning, and we're out of spare colors, light grey could be the other enemy's mark.

I have legos, better blocks, k'nex, construx & geomags, none of which really help here. There's always the option of making tokens, but at that point I might as well just buy some. (That last link are the tokens we actually used. It would cost $75 for a set.)

I've thought about buying minis, status markers, tact-tiles and dry-erase markers, but it's all a bit of an investment and my job doesn't actually pay me right now. Maybe after we've been playing for a while...

As for the inevitable "Is all of this necessary?" It lets the players see the exact state of the battle and decide their turns relatively quickly. Even with all this, with players who know what their character's options are, and a fast DM, I've had battles take upwards for 3 hours. Some are much much shorter... But you never know ahead of time, really. Status effects are very common, even at level 1, and the precise squares everyone are in are very important. (Especially because I try to make the terrain as interesting as possible. A room full of orcs is not all that interesting, but a room with some squares that slide you an extra square if you try to stop on them with a bunch of orcs in the room is more interesting.)

Don't worry, I'm gonna start off with stuff designed to teach you how to play the game before I start with stuff like that. Give you a few tastes of a few different things and let you learn how to do what you want your characters to do with this system, which will likely mean a few plain rooms with a few orcs to fight... Like a sort of tutorial to the system.

Coordinating schedules is hard. I'd like some info from people on when they can or cannot possibly play.

Tuesdays & Thursdays are out. That leaves Sun, Mon, Wed, Fri & Sat. Within that, when are people free enough to play?

I'm going to make something similar to Tact-Tiles using this guide:

http://gmfoundation.wordpress.com/2007/ ... act-tiles/

Except I'm going to use this shape, which is more versatile, like actual Tact-Tiles:

Hopefully I have a steady enough hand.

Three of you live together, so it may bake more sense to have sessions there. However, we might run out of table space. You'll each have a character sheet, dice, probably power cards, and the central board... The board could potentially be 41" x 31" or 61" x 21". My table is bigger. I also have a portable smaller table that I could set up next to either of our tables for more surface-space if we need it. Though, at level 1, you'll only have about 4 power cards each, so it shouldn't take up TOO much space yet... It probably doesn't really matter right now. Though, I would need a ride if it's not here.

What do you guys think?

I made an image of the layout of the 30" x 40" boards I'm gonna cut out:

The white sections are the playing tiles. The Reds are markers for Gargantuan Sized (4x4 tiles) creatures. The Greens are markers for Huge Sized (3x3 tiles) creatures. The Blues are markers for the Large Sized (2x2 tiles) creatures. The Purples are markers for Medium (1x1 tile) creatures, like you all are. I have three boards, but two boards will give me exactly what I need, so I'll keep the 3rd board for spare parts (just in case). I've started making the grid lines, but need about 20 feet of self-adhesive laminate to continue to the next step. I can get a 24 foot roll for $7. The Foam Boards were $20, the Xacto Knife was $4 and the Dry Erase Markers were $4, so that'll total $33. The Battlegraph tiles and Alea Tools markers would've been $75 each, totaling $154, AND my tiles will be more versatile than Battlegraph's.

Warning, image is actual size: http://www.gamecheetz.com/TactTiles2.png

I was able to make 15 different colors of the tiles.

Colors:
Green - Ongoing damage
Dk Green - A different ongoing damage
Red - Bloodied, 2 Reds = Unconscious
Purple - Quarry/Oath/Curse
Dk Purple - A different Quarry/Oath/Curse
Lt Brown - Slowed
Brown - Immobilized
Yellow - Stunned
Orange - Dazed
Pink - Dominated
Dk Red - Weakened
Lt Blue - Marked by Party's Swordmage
Blue - Marked by Enemy
Dk Blue - Marked by another Enemy
White - Prone

For the Blinded, Restrained, Deafened & Petrified conditions, we'll just use a color not being used that battle. Those 4 are rare conditions.
